Hi, we are the Ice Family!

We are excited and honored to share our home with you. It is a special place, and our hope is that your stay will be marked by rest, relaxation, and fun.

We call Texas home, but our family has deep ties to Santa Fe. In 1988 our grandparents — Grandma Lee Ice and Grandpa Noel Ice — moved from Fort Worth to Santa Fe, where they lived for over 30 years and introduced us to the beauty and enchantment of this special city.

We spent most Christmases and summers here growing up. Some of our fondest memories as kids were hiking amidst ponderosa pines and aspens, Christmas Eves on Canyon Road, my grandmother's green chile stew, the smell of burning piñon wood, window shopping in the Plaza, and watching sunsets over the Sangre de Cristo Mountains.

We have been obsessed with Santa Fe for as long as we can remember. It's a city oozing with magic and vibe — all the perks of outdoor mountain life, but also soul and timelessness in its culture and art.

We purchased and lovingly restored this 1980s adobe home as an homage to our grandparents, and to create a place for our children to experience a city that was such a huge part of our upbringing — with the hope that they'll make memories of their own for years to come. We hope you enjoy this special place as much as we do.

01 · ABOUT THE PROPERTY

Six bedrooms on six acres.

Enjoy our modern twist on Santa Fe living: a large 6-bedroom estate on 6 acres of New Mexico's natural beauty. Whether you're soaking up the day in the hot tub or catching Georgia O'Keeffe-worthy sunsets around the outdoor Kiva fireplace, at Casa de Camino you are guaranteed to relax and make memories you will never forget.

02 · GETTING HERE

One of the best things about Casa de Camino is how convenient it is to come and go from town. You never have to get on a freeway — it's a straight shot down Old Pecos Trail, which becomes Old Las Vegas Highway, a two-lane scenic route into Santa Fe that's also famous for biking.

From town

  1. 01Head south on Old Pecos Trail / Old Las Vegas Highway.
  2. 02Turn west (right) onto the 9 Mile Road bridge, and follow 9 Mile Road south.
  3. 03Turn northwest (right) on Camino Tetzcoco — the last street before 9 Mile Road dead-ends. Camino Tetzcoco and Camino Oriente are dirt roads, but well maintained.
  4. 04Follow Camino Tetzcoco until you hit Camino Oriente, then turn right on Camino Oriente.
  5. 05The property is the first house on the right — pull up to the stucco courtyard gate with the rounded double doors. Open them and they'll lead you to the front door.

The TV is hooked up to the internet only — no local networks or cable. We provide a Netflix subscription, and you're welcome to sign into your own streaming accounts (Prime, Disney+, and the rest) while you're here.

05 · HOT TUB

Kept at 104 degrees, year-round.

Before you soak

All guests must shower before and after using the hot tub. There is no alarm and no lock on the hot tub — supervise children at all times. Use at your own risk.

The hot tub is kept at 104°F. To use it, unclip the spa cover and remove it from the tub. Replace and secure the cover immediately after use — it's for insulation only and isn't designed to support weight, so please don't stand or sit on it.

To keep the spa clean and clear, add approximately 1 tablespoon of the white shock powder and 1 tablespoon of the blue solution after each use. The chemicals are in the compartment of the spa stairs — lift the top step lid. Use caution when handling them and don't use too much.

Black full-length towels are provided for hot tub and outside use — please keep the white towels indoors.

06 · THE BARREL SAUNA

One clunk on. Two clunks off.

Before you use the sauna

Guests must be at least 16 years old to use the sauna. Anyone pregnant or with heart conditions, cardiovascular concerns, or other health issues affected by heat should consult a physician first. Use at your own risk.

The barrel sauna runs on a Harvia electric heater. Two dials on the front of the heater, down low.

Turning it on

  1. 01Turn the LEFT dial (the thermostat) to max, or wherever you like it.
  2. 02Turn the RIGHT dial (the timer) clockwise until you hear a solid CLUNK. One clunk means the heater is on and heating. The number the dial lands on is how many hours it will run — 2 is plenty for a session.
  3. 03Heard a SECOND clunk? You turned too far — two clunks means the heater is now OFF and set to a delayed start. Turn the dial back counterclockwise until you hear the clunk again. One clunk: on and heating.
  4. 04Give it about 30 minutes to come up to temperature with the door closed.
  5. 05When you're done, turn the timer back to 0.

Rule of thumb: one clunk = on. Two clunks = off.

07 · FIRES & FIREWOOD

The smell of piñon is a true taste of Santa Fe.

Casa de Camino features four areas for a controlled fire: the indoor Kiva fireplaces in the living room and upstairs bedroom, the outdoor Kiva fireplace, and the adobe firepit around the back.

Fire rules

Keep the Kiva and firepit screen covers on any time there's a fire. Never leave a fire unattended, and fully extinguish flames before leaving the area. Fire extinguishers are by the supplies at each fireplace. Outdoor fires wrap up by 10:30 PM.

How to light a Kiva fire

  1. 01Make sure the chimney flue draft is open so airflow goes up the chimney and not into the room. (We generally leave the flues open at all times.)
  2. 02Place the provided firestarter materials in a pile in the center back of the fireplace.
  3. 03Stack your firewood vertically around the kindling in a teepee shape toward the back — in a Kiva, wood stands up rather than lying flat.
  4. 04Light the kindling and, if needed, blow on the fire gently.
  5. 05Enjoy — tend it by adding more wood as the existing sticks collapse.

One complimentary stack of firewood is provided for your stay. Additional bundles are nearby:

  • Sunrise General Store — 52 Old Las Vegas Hwy, a 6-minute drive from the house
  • Santa Fe Speedway (gas station) — 2774 Sawmill Rd
  • Seasonal roadside vendors at the corner of Old Las Vegas Highway and Rodeo Road
  • Home Depot or Lowe's in town

Please don't gather or burn fallen wood from the property. Before you leave, sweep ashes and debris into the metal bins at each fireplace and the firepit — leftover ashes incur a $50 cleaning fee.

08 · THE KITCHEN & RANGE

Casa de Camino is equipped with a commercial-style range that's perfect for cooking for large groups. It runs hotter and is a bit more involved than a traditional oven, so a few things to know before you cook:

Read before using the range

The burners must be lit with a lighter — the pilot lights are disabled for safety. Have your lighter lit and ready BEFORE you turn on the gas: gas releases quickly, and any delay in lighting can cause a large burst of flame.

When turning the oven off, the dial briefly sticks on the ignition symbol. Move it 100% to the OFF position — if it's left on the ignition symbol, propane gas will continue to flow.

Lighting the oven

  1. 01The ovens have pilot lights and ignite automatically: move the oven dial to the lighting symbol.
  2. 02After a few seconds on the lighting symbol, move it to your desired temperature — you should hear the sound of gas lighting.
  3. 03Hear nothing? Move the dial back to off and repeat the ignition process.

Coffee: the kitchen has a 2-in-1 Keurig that brews single K-Cups or a full pot. The back water tank slides up and out for filling; choose the oz (single) or cups (pot) option and select your amount. Casa de Camino does not provide coffee, so bring your favorite.

09 · HEATING & COOLING

Casa de Camino has mini-split units in the living room, dining room, kitchen, and king suites, providing both heating and cooling. The other bedrooms and common areas have radiant floor heating — those rooms do not have air conditioning, but all are equipped with fans, and opening the windows keeps the house comfortable most days.

The mini-split remotes are mounted on the walls for easy access — they rest in their plastic holders rather than sliding all the way in, so please set them back any time you use one. The remotes are directional: point one directly at the unit or it won't respond. Select the sun icon for heat or the snowflake for cooling with the mode button, then set your temperature with the arrows.

We recommend 67–72°F for heat in winter and 70–76°F for cooling in summer. Please help us conserve energy by turning the temperature up in summer and down in winter when you leave the house.

Mini-split showing an error code?

The mini-split units are interconnected. If you see an error code and the units aren't responding, it's almost certainly because one room is set to heat while another is set to cool. The fix: set every room to the same mode — all heat, or all cool — and the error clears.

A few standalone plug-in heaters are available for extra warmth in a bathroom or the sunroom. Two plug-in heaters cannot run on the same circuit at once — they draw serious power and will trip the breaker — and they can't run alongside blow dryers or curling irons either.

If a breaker trips, the panel is on the exterior of the house, on the first wall you see once you enter the front courtyard.

10 · CLEANING & LINENS

The vacuum, mops, brooms, and cleaning supplies are in the laundry room. Use the black towels or dish towels for cleaning messes.

Laundry detergent is in the laundry room, and dishwasher pods are provided.

Extra towels are in the closet at the end of the long hallway. Please use the black hand towels for makeup removal, and the black full-length towels for hot tub and outside use — the white towels stay indoors.

11 · TRASH & RECYCLING

The one trash rule that matters

All trash goes in bags, tied. If it's loose in the bin, the trash company will not pick it up — the collectors grab bags by hand.

Trash bags are under the kitchen sink; full bags go in the large outdoor container. Recycling goes in the green bins, with cardboard broken down. Pickup is every Thursday — the trash service drives up the driveway and picks up where the containers sit, so there's no need to take anything to the end of the drive.

12 · CAUTION & FIRST AID

Much of the landscaping is natural and native — cactuses, yuccas, steep cliffs, and rocks included. Use caution outside, especially around cactuses. Tweezers and a first aid kit are in a drawer in the kitchen island.

The decks and outdoor spaces deserve care, especially with children and the elderly: there are large drop-offs, rocky terrain, and steep natural flagstone stairs down to the picnic area. Explore at your own risk.

It's not unusual to see deer, rabbits, bobcats, mice, hawks, coyotes, wolves, hummingbirds, lizards, and even snakes. There has been recent bear activity in the area — keep exterior doors closed when not actively in use, and keep food and trash secured. Be respectful of the wildlife and act with caution outdoors.

Winter note: a hard snow is rare this far south of town, and what falls usually burns off fast. We plow the driveway when it's needed, and snow shovels are on site.

13 · CHECKOUT

Before you head out.

Check-out is at 10:00 AM. Before you depart, please help us with the following:

  • Trash. All trash in bags, tied, in the large outdoor container. Bags are under the kitchen sink — loose trash won't be picked up.
  • Dishes. Rinse dirty dishes and load the dishwasher; if it's full, place extras on the counter next to the sink. Start the dishwasher before you leave.
  • Towels. Place dirty towels in the laundry room.
  • Bedding. No need to strip the beds.
  • Fireplace & firepit. If you used the Kivas or firepit, sweep your ashes into the metal bins. Leftover ashes incur a $50 extra cleaning fee.
  • Lock up. Touch the keypad screen and press the lock symbol on your way out.
