DRINKS & VIEWS

Bars, breweries, and a great happy hour.

Santa Fe isn't a late-night town, but the cocktails and craft beer here punch well above their weight.

THE BIG PICTURE

What you should actually know.

Santa Fe goes to bed early. That sounds like a complaint, but it's actually one of the things we love about it — the city has decided it would rather do golden-hour drinks really well than chase a midnight scene that nobody's asking for. The result is a town where 4 PM at the right patio is the best two hours of your day.

What's quietly remarkable is the quality. There's a lavender-farm cocktail bar (Bar Norte). A speakeasy jazz room (Tonic). A rooftop happy hour with mountain views (Skyfire). A pottery pub where the kids throw clay while you order a flight (Tumbleroot). And a sparkling-wine tasting room where the bottles are made an hour south. None of these would be out of place in a much bigger city. We just get to keep them to ourselves.
