What you should actually know.
Santa Fe punches absurdly above its weight in the art world. By most counts it's the third-largest art market in the United States, behind only New York and Los Angeles — a city of 90,000 people quietly hosting hundreds of working galleries, major museums, and one of the longest continuously inhabited Native American art traditions on the continent. You feel it within an hour of arriving.
Our recommendation is to give the art two days, not one. Spend the first afternoon walking Canyon Road slowly from the bottom up, ducking into whatever galleries pull you in, and ending with lunch or drinks at The Teahouse. Spend the second morning at the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum, then walk the Plaza shops and the portal of the Palace of the Governors where Native artists sell their work directly. Two slow days will do more for you than any whirlwind itinerary.
