Henry & The Fish: casual café near the Plaza.

Henry & The Fish is a casual café on San Francisco Street, just off the Plaza, and it's the cup we send people to when they don't want to think about it. Breakfast, smoothies, salads, sandwiches, excellent coffee — the kind of all-day spot where you can land at 9 AM with a laptop or 1 PM with a friend and the room handles either one.

The coffee is the headline. They serve La Colombe, which is a personal favorite around our houses, and they pour it across a wide variety of creative drinks — matcha lattes, lavender lattes, smoothies, the whole modern café menu without any of the affectation that usually comes with it. The lavender latte in particular is the right move on a sunny morning when you want something a little more interesting than a flat white.

What makes it useful is the location. Most of our favorite coffee spots — Iconik downtown, the Teahouse on Canyon Road — are intentional walks. Henry & The Fish is the one that just happens to be where you already are. If you've parked downtown to walk the Plaza, browse the Palace of the Governors portal, or hit the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum, this is the easiest morning fuel-up on the loop.

The food side does what it needs to. Smoothies are real fruit, not syrup. The sandwiches and salads are the right size for a quick lunch between a morning hike and an afternoon at the galleries. Nothing on the menu is the reason you came to Santa Fe, but everything on it is solid, and that's actually the harder thing to pull off in a tourist-heavy downtown.

Practical notes for visitors: it's a small room, so peak-hour seating can be tight on a weekend. Order at the counter, grab a seat, and don't expect table service. Wi-Fi is usable if you're working remotely for an hour. The patio area is small but pleasant when the weather cooperates.

Pair it with a Plaza morning — coffee here, then a walk over to the cathedral, the O'Keeffe, or down to Canyon Road. Or use it as the in-and-out stop on a day that's mostly about something else: a hike at Sun Mountain, a drive up to Tsankawi, an afternoon at Ten Thousand Waves.

It's not a destination on its own. It's the rare downtown café that does the small things well enough that you'll happily come back for a second cup.
