WELLNESS
The wellness trio: sauna, cold plunge, repeat.

When we were planning the renovation at Casa de Ice, the question we kept asking was: what would make this the home our family wished they could find when they traveled? The sunroom off the courtyard — sauna, cold plunge, and the hot tub a few steps away — was the answer that came up most.
The science on contrast therapy is decent and getting better. The basic idea: you cycle between hot and cold to push your circulation, build vagal tone, and reset your nervous system. There's a body of literature out of Finland on sauna use and cardiovascular health that's hard to argue with at this point.
Here's how to actually do it on a trip. Start with the infrared sauna for fifteen to twenty minutes. The infrared panels heat your body directly rather than the ambient air, so you'll sweat less but the cellular effect is similar. Hydrate.
Then do thirty to ninety seconds in the cold plunge. The plunge holds at 54°F. Your body will tell you it's a bad idea. Breathe slow through it and stay until you've taken five long exhales. Get out.
Move to the hot tub for ten minutes at 104°F. Repeat the cycle two or three times if you have the morning. If you only have time for one round, that's fine — even one cycle does the work.
We get asked: who's it for? Honestly, almost everyone. The exceptions are the obvious ones — pregnancy, certain heart conditions, anyone who's been advised against thermal stress. If that's you, just sit on the patio with a coffee. The view does most of the work.
