SHOP LOCAL

Where the locals actually shop.

Santa Fe shopping is about finding the thing you'll keep. Hats, boots, jewelry, the occasional treasure.

THE BIG PICTURE

What you should actually know.

Santa Fe shopping isn't really about shopping. It's about taking home an object that holds the trip — a hat that will outlive you, a pair of boots you'll wear for ten years, a piece of Native American silver from an artist who sat across from you under the portal of the Palace of the Governors. The city has been a market town for almost 400 years and it shows. Nothing here is mass-produced.

The two best loops we know: walk the Plaza and the side streets just off it (O'Farrell for hats, Nambe for home goods, Doodlet's for the kids, Goler for shoes), then drive over to the consignment scene on the edges of downtown (Double Take and The Raven) where the deepest finds tend to live. Bring an empty suitcase. We're serious.
